Rumours and university go hand in hand like coffee on a cold day. Or, ice cream on a hot day. Actually rumours aren’t just a part of University life they are also part of everyone’s daily life. When you are at work, school, college or even a holiday. Rumours and gossiping just don’t stop.
I would be lying if I said I don’t gossip or that I don’t believe in rumours. The reality is we have all heard rumours about someone and believed them, we might have even passed them on to others believing they are true. But do we ever think about the impact it has on that person?
Think about the time you heard a bad rumour about yourself. Something so untrue yet so painful that it broke your heart. How did you feel? What did you want to do? I am sure you wanted to find the person who spread that rumour or gossiped about you and tell them it’s untrue or tell people to just stop gossiping about you. Tell people to leave you alone.
So next time when you are talking about someone, remember the feeling you get when you heard someone talking about you or spreading things about. If you don’t want to be talked about, don’t talk about others.
Next time, you hear something about someone just ignore it and move on because you don’t know whether it is true or not. Stop believing everything you hear and stop spreading everything you know about someone.
At this point, I want to apologise to everyone I have ever believed a bad rumour about. I want to say sorry to every person whose heart I might have hurt by believing the untrue words of someone who wasn’t even sure about whether they were telling the truth.
The reality is that this post won’t stop the gossiping or the rumours but I believe change begins with a single person. Even if one person stops the gossip, change will come and people will stop. See the good in people and believe the good about people <3
