Meeting Michael Sheen -DfC

The DfC trip gave me many opportunities and I learnt so many things throughout the journey.

But one of my favourite sessions was a talk given by Michael Sheen.

When I first heard that Michael Sheen was giving a talk, I wasn’t sure what to expect. He’s an actor and social enterprise and DfC didn’t seem like something that would fit in with his life. How naive was I to think that?

Because what followed was one of the most inspirational 1 hour of my life. I am not exaggerating!

He said many things that really made me think but one of the most important thing he said was:

When helping others, don’t use your privilege to impose things on them. But try to understand what it is that they want and need, and give them exactly that.

Often when we are in the position to help people, we choose to help people in a way that suits us but really we need to think about what the people need. There is no point imposing your rules and your ideals on other people, because you are not helping them in that way.

That really stuck with me and something I feel we should all consider when helping anyone. True change comes when you all work together to understand the needs of each other rather than forcing your ideas. If we understand this simple thing, the world could be a lot better.
