Anyone who knows me knows that over the past few months I have done a lot of travelling and exploring. Many people ask how I manage to afford the travelling considering I’m a student intern so I get paid like absolute crap. Well, my answer is…
Well, the reality is that I follow a few simple steps that ensure that I’m able to travel and explore new places:
- Living on a budget. This means that I pretty much set myself a budget every week and try not to go over that. This also means that I walk to most places rather than paying for public transport to save those extra euros. I do good shopping in bulk which saves me money even if carrying it kills me off.
- Cheap tickets. The most important thing is finding cheap tickets. I have nearly all the flight comparison sights bookmarked and I go on them a few times a month looking for good deals. eDreams is a good website for finding some good deals. I don’t go in with a place in mind but a budget and go to the place that is perfect. Often I have been to amazing places that I didn’t even know about because of this trick and I have managed to bag some cheap offers.
- Hostels over hotels. Now many people who travel prefer to live on hotels and resorts but I spend my night in hostels. Hostels are a cheap way of living even if it does mean that I end up living with 8-10 people in one room. But that makes them a social place as I get to meet new people all the time which is great as I’m a solo traveller. How cheap can hostels be? I have lived in a hostel for as little as €8 for a night. Bargain! Use Hostel World to find the best deals.
- Travel on a budget. Now when I’m exploring and travelling I don’t pay entrance fees for everything or go crazy with spending money on everything I see. I start off with a free walking tour. That means that a tour guide takes a group of people on a walking tour of the city and at the end, you pay them what you think is suitable. This is a great way to explore the city, learn its history and also find out which places you like and want to go into and which places you’ll give a miss. Some of the walking tours I recommend are Good tour Prague, Wroclaw tour, Budapest Tour and many, many more.
Many people think travelling like this is no fun but I have had the most amazing times and met some lovely people along the way. I know I don’t have to travel like that but this a new experience because this way I can really immerse myself in the culture and the country as I shop where the local do and eat where the locals go.
